2007 Press Releases

RealNetworks and TDF Partner to Develop an Application Delivery Platform for European Operators

Fusion of expertise allows customers across Europe to offer video services over mobile and broadband networks

London and Paris — February 8, 2007  —  RealNetworks (NASDAQ: RNWK) and TDF's wholly owned subsidiary Cognacq-Jay Image (CJI), the leader in production and playout operation, today announced a major agreement to jointly develop a video services delivery platform for European companies. The new partnership is based around the complementary technologies and capabilities offered by Real and CJI, enhancing both Real's expertise in managed services and CJI's multimedia innovation and broadcast control across the entire TV and radio broadcast chain, from production to playout.

This new converged Application Service Provider (ASP) platform combines back-and front-end applications developed by Real and CJI respectively allowing Mobile Network Operators, media companies and MVNOs to deliver a wide range of video services over broadband and mobile networks.

"This new initiative, the first of its kind for Real in Europe, represents a major step towards the true convergence of networks and applications," said John Giamatteo, President Technology Products & Solutions and International Operations, RealNetworks. "Our work with TDF to create this innovative end-to-end multimedia services platform reflects our growth from the provision of technology towards a position where we are able to offer end-to-end managed service solutions."

"This agreement fits within our strategy of development in our Multimedia division and allows us to offer the most advanced and innovative services to content providers and telecom operators" said Michel Rénéric, Director of TDF Multimedia.

In addition to having two development legacies combined into one product for VOD and Live TV applications, the partnership means that operators can forego investment in lengthy and costly in-house platform development. MVNOs, telecoms and mobile network operators can enjoy a speed to market advantage through deploying this carrier-grade video services delivery solution to enable play-out to play-back on a wide variety of devices, client applications and networks while remaining focused on their core business.

Designed to enable operators and content providers to launch compelling consumer services, the ASP platform supports all possible combinations of consumption and charging models, from subscription to pay-per-view.

The partnership between RealNetworks and CJI will see Real offering CJI commercial experience of managing carrier-class ASP services, with CJI's strong customer relationships providing a route for Real to increase its sales presence and growth potential across Europe.

"Real has a history of continuous innovation of its Helix server platform and in provisioning ASP services," said Franck Langrand, CEO, CJI. "We also saw the potential of Real's heritage in allowing us to merge our IP and broadcast playout with their existing IP solutions as a good way to quickly bring to market a platform which enables compelling services over mobile broadband and broadcast networks."

Marco Menato, Vice President EMEA, RealNetworks commented, "As a provider of analogue and digital television, radio broadcasting and multimedia services across Europe, TDF offers a wealth of broadcast network management experience. As operators build out their networks and incorporate additional video functionality as a means to ramp up revenues, we will leverage existing contacts to propose and promote our video services."

"We have combined forces strategically, capitalising on our own individual core assets to provide a new window of opportunity for any European operator with ambitions to put video at the heart of their future strategy, not to mention increased ARPU," Menato continued.

A commercial demo of the new ASP platform services will be available this February at the 3GSM World Congress in Barcelona and operationally available from June 2007.
